Hell? Pah. Been there, done that, got the shin splints
So about last weekend...
The one I affectionately refer to as HELL ON EARTH - was our mini-competition on the Isle of Wight. 3 words describe the pain and the exhaustion.
Oh.
My.
God.
We started on Friday night for a 110 minute night navigation. We got back at 1130 and then went to bed to be up, washed, breakfasted and ready to leave for 830 the next morning. We then had a 3 hour run, walk, navigation exercise, a 1 hour puzzle session based in a classroom whilst we had our lunch, followed by a 4 hour bike session and then rush back to the hut to get our dinner to be then followed by another 2hour session which included running/walking and creating a working model of a lighthouse. That was just painful. We finally finished that and our Queen Victoria family tree (don't ask...) by 1145pm. We went to bed soon after that and then had to be up, washed, packed, breakfasted and out for 815am to start our new 4 and a half hour stage which included running/walking and canoeing.
Word of advice: if anyone EVER tells you that all islands are flat, DON'T BELIEVE THE LYING BASTARDS! Some of the hills that we had to go up were truly angina inducing.
After all of that, we were finally allowed to go home (yay!) completely broken.. I was the captain of this team of 5 - the real captain was away on holiday, living it up in Florida the bastard! - and I was a bag of nerves the whole time. We were a completely novice team and also not the fittest (as in, not like the elite teams who frequently ran 3 miles in 15 minutes - yes. They are THAT fast..) and we had 3 injured people.
In total we ran/walked approximately 45km, biked about 17km and canoed about 2km. From Friday 830pm to Sunday 130pm. Not bad going really. And we were competing against some serious competition.
And we came 18th out of 25 contenders.
And you know what? We are damn proud of that. I am damn proud of that! We beat off some serious competition and for the real event in June, we'll do even better. Know why?
BECAUSE WE TOTALLY ROCK!
Oooh. Just a little bit of testosterone gone awry there...
I will say this.. It's taken me the whole damn week to get over it. I don't think I have felt this tired before. I can't wait for next month when the BIG ADVENTURE starts! I am now soooo excited, I'm probably going to injure myself with over-doing the training. I have a 6am train to catch tomorrow and I have a presentation to give to the whole Welsh council on Thursday (not liking that)but I should still be able to fit at least 4 days of running, 1 night of canoeing and 3 days of swimming next week. I feel like I've been sooo slack.
I'm not going to overdo it though. I'll go for light runs and I'm only going to do the manic spin session and not the crazy body combat classes that are the coolest! Seriously, you'd think that I was a lean, mean toned machine but I'm not. I've got thighs big enough to feed a nation and enough primary school wobble to create a tornado. And don't even get me started on cellulite! Urgh! But, I am fitter now than I ever have been and in my newly discovered zen state, I have the patience to wait for thin thighs. And toned arms. And to win the lottery to afford plastic surgery..!
